This article is mostly obsolete, but there is a link to a document that is useful; I’ll get around to fixing this post at some point.
Most of you have probably read about the IBM i Access Client Solutions product that was announced in July of 2012; several articles have been written on the topic. The IBM i Access website section on Client Solutions has a summary of the functionality, and it’s on this page that you will find the URL to download the latest updates.
I’m not going to rewrite information that you can find in the IBM articles I’ve linked to or that you can find in other resources. Rather, I wanted you to know that just this past week, a new article, IBM i Access Client Solutions: Accessing IBM i has never been easier, was added to the IBM i developerWorks site.
This article has the summary information on the product capabilities that you may have already read about. However, it has additional information on how to enable IBM i Access Solutions—whether you require a portable solution you can plug in with a USB drive, various other ways you deploy this solution, as well as considerations for mobile devices and how you can run this product on your iPad. While the application won’t run natively on an iPad, you can connect to your IBM i with either SSH or VNC, run the application on the IBM i partition, and use the iPad as the display. The article has step-by-step instructions for how you can do this.
Feedback on the product is important during the technology preview timeframe. (After all, isn’t that the whole point of doing a beta?) So if you have problems they should be reported through the support process. Feedback can also be made to IBM for feature requests or product enhancements.
