If an IBM i system has one or more independent auxiliary storage pools (IASPs) available and a Backup, Recovery & Media Services (BRMS) control group with a *LINK backup item for ASP device *ALLAVL is used to save integrated file system (IFS) objects, a single media file will be generated. The media file will contain objects from the system ASP, user ASPs and IASPs. I want to tell you about a recently announced enhancement to IBM i 7.1 that allows you to natively attach entry-level external storage even to a Power Systems Express Model 710 or 720. Some of the supported configurations do not require a switch. This gives you a low-cost entry point into an external storage configuration that is a building block for some of the newer Power Systems and IBM i technologies, and gives an option for adding additional storage to the Power Systems Express systems that cannot attach an additional I/O drawer.

The work-management team recently made available some changes with PTFs to help control the behavior of job creation for cases when a program may get in a loop submitting jobs. The change made with the PTF is to slow down the creation of new jobs when the system is approaching the limit for the maximum number of jobs (QMAXJOB system value). This support is in the base operating system in 7.1 and later releases.
