In release IBM i 7.1 and later, IBM Backup, Recovery and Media Services for i (BRMS) has been enhanced to support the transfer of virtual save media from image catalogs to/from the cloud using product 5733ICC – Cloud Storage Solutions for i. Cloud Storage Solutions for i allows cloud connector resources to be defined for cloud storage providers such as IBM’s SoftLayer and for private interfaces such as file transfer protocol (FTP).

IBM i backup strategies may use journaling to shorten or eliminate down time for applications during backups. BRMS provides special control group entries which assist in backing up journal receivers for these backup strategies.

One significant change in IBM i 7.2 is the modernization of storage tiering in the BRMS migration function. In prior releases, the migration function in BRMS works only for library migration between auxiliary storage pools (ASPs) based on the specified policies for frequency of use. However, in IBM i 7.2 with PTF SI57831 applied, the BRMS migration function is enhanced to support the migration to independent ASPs (IASPs), migration of *LNK lists for IFS files, and migration of database files to different SSD and HDD storage tiers within the same ASP.

If an IBM i system has one or more independent auxiliary storage pools (IASPs) available and a Backup, Recovery & Media Services (BRMS) control group with a *LINK backup item for ASP device *ALLAVL is used to save integrated file system (IFS) objects, a single media file will be generated. The media file will contain objects from the system ASP, user ASPs and IASPs. BRMS will produce a saved item for objects in the system ASP and user ASPs and saved items for objects on each of the IASPs. Each of the saved items refer to the same media file.

BRMS Enterprise capabilities: For clients who have several systems, managing backups can be a chore. The Enterprise features of BRMS, which are part of the BRMS Advanced feature, make it easier to do centralized management in these environments.
