Once again it is announcement time, with IBM i 7.3 Technology Refresh 2 and IBM i 7.2 Technology Refresh 6 being announced. As is somewhat typical for these Technology Refresh announcements, the content for both releases is quite similar. Steve Will’s blog Announcing IBM i 7.3 TR2 & 7.2 TR6 reviews the announcement overall. I want to focus on a few enhancements that will make an IBM i administrator’s life a little easier.

(more…)IBM i 7.3 is here! IBM i 7.3 has added a feature called “Security Authority Collection” which tracks how applications and application users “use” an object. Inquiries against that collection will provide advice on securing critical business data and applications from intrusion by identifying who needs to have access to data and in what context. This is a major enhancement to security management that is unique to IBM i.

(more…)SQL CPU Utilization was introduced in the IBM i 7.2 release. This metric helps you discover how much of your CPU is being used by SQL operations, and is a starting point to determine if your CPU utilization is due to SQL or other work on the system. This metric is available on a per-thread basis and aggregated for the partition as a whole.
