I like birthdays, even as the numbers get larger. I’ll admit that I like to get birthday presents; I like to give them too. This week marks the 4th year of the “i Can” blog, so this week’s blog is a gift of reading material.
The reference material in this blog is a bit dated, but I left it in place as some of these links are still useful. I will write a 2020 version at some point.

I want to tell you about a recently announced enhancement to IBM i 7.1 that allows you to natively attach entry-level external storage even to a Power Systems Express Model 710 or 720. Some of the supported configurations do not require a switch. This gives you a low-cost entry point into an external storage configuration that is a building block for some of the newer Power Systems and IBM i technologies, and gives an option for adding additional storage to the Power Systems Express systems that cannot attach an additional I/O drawer.

Last week, as part of the IBM i 7.1 TR6 announcement, we also announced several new enhancements to PowerHA SystemMirror for i. These enhancements will be available by the end of March via PTFs (SI48371, SI48522, and SI48540). All the changes will be available for the 7.1 release in every language currently supported by PowerHA.

The types of storage used by IBM i customers have become as varied as the types of business that run on IBM i. As virtualization becomes more common and clients move into an external storage environment, PowerHA has technologies that integrate the replication capabilities on those external storage servers with IBM i.
