IBM i backup strategies may use journaling to shorten or eliminate down time for applications during backups. BRMS provides special control group entries which assist in backing up journal receivers for these backup strategies.

Remote Journaling has been available on IBM i for many releases. It provides an efficient way to replicate journal entries from one system to another and is often part of a high availability or disaster recovery solution. As HA and DR have become a high priority in recent years, remote journaling has become more heavily used and multiple enhancements have been made in recent releases.

If you’re on IBM i 6.1 and have not yet started to use IBM Navigator for i, there’s never been a better time to start using it! With the recently released Service Pack 8 PTFs (SI42186, SI42187, SI42188), you’ll find many new enhancements that were previously available only in 7.1.

An exciting enhancement has been added to IBM i. Through a new Db2 for i provided user defined table function (UDTF), IBM i users can use SQL to interrogate journal objects (drum roll please …). The enhancement has been provided via PTFs to V5R4M5, IBM i 6.1 and 7.1, and is available in all subsequent releases.
